Pre-entry Assessment

A one day sailing assessment, which is essential for you to show that your sailing ability is to the standard required to become a dinghy instructor. During the day you will be asked to demonstrate that you can sail both two man and single handed dinghies. The skills that will be checked are based on the RYA seamanship manoeuvres.

RYA Dinghy Instructor

This course is a popular five day course of intensive training covering the many aspects of teaching dinghy sailing. The course introduces you to the RYA method, the structure of the RYA and how to teach a wide range of ages and abilities.

The course is run by an RYA Coach Assessor and there is moderation on the final day by a second coach. Please make sure you have read a current copy of G14, G11 and G4 before the course and remember to bring these with you.

The pre-requisites for the course are RYA Level 2 Powerboat and First Aid - you must also have successfully completed a pre-assessment of your personal sailing ability. All of which can be carried out at the MBC.

RYA Keelboat Instructor Endorsement

This course includes a pre-entry assessment on your keelboat sailing skills, and covers the different aspects between teaching in dinghies and keelboats.

RYA Multi-hull Instructor Endorsement

During this two day course you will look at all aspects of cat sailing technique including launch and landing, capsize, tacking, gybing and apparent wind. You will also be assessed on your ability to sail a multi-hull.

RYA Advanced Dinghy Instructor Endorsement

If you are an experienced dinghy instructor and wish to instruct the more advanced sailing skills then this course is a must. Sessions covered will include out to coach spinnakers, trapeze, rudderless and crew work. You will also look at advanced seamanship skills and navigation. Be prepared to be challenged.

RYA Senior Dinghy Instructor

This course deals with the transition from managing your own boat to that of being a fleet manager. This course will cover preparation and delivery, course and centre management, instructor management, roles of a senior instructor and teaching both young people and adults to all levels.

Assessment will be continual when running simulated group management sessions. The pre-requisites for the course are RYA Safety Boat, valid First Aid, at least two years intermittent sailing instruction or one year full-time. A recommendation from a principle of a teaching establishment is also necessary.

RYA Powerboat Instructor

The four day course covers the teaching of powerboat levels 1 and 2 and the five day includes safety boat. It covers both practical on the water teaching and theory based teaching. All students will run a number of practical sessions and are given help in identifying areas to progress in.

The pre-requisites for this course are level 2 powerboat, powerboat experience and a valid First Aid certificate. Holders of safety boat certificates will also be able to teach safety boat on the successful completion of the course.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor

This course gives you the opportunity to qualify to instruct the RYA advanced powerboat courses. It runs over one evening and two days. During the course you will cover all aspects of the advanced syllabus.

Pre-requisites are that you hold an advanced powerboat and a RYA Powerboat Instructor certificate.
