What's it like being an apprentice activity instructor at the Mount Batten Centre?

10th December 2014

We caught up with John one of our new apprentice activity instructors and found out how he's getting on after 3 months of intensive training!

Hi I’m John and I’m an apprentice activity instructor at the Mount Batten Centre, having joined in mid-September 2014. Before this I had done very little water sports and didn’t really consider the possibilities of a job in this field of work. However, after just three months I’m greatly enjoying the various land and water based activities that I’m developing my skills in. Every morning I feel enthusiastic to come to work and improve as an instructor for the Centre. This apprenticeship has already given me a range of qualifications and experiences and and I still have eight months left to go! I naturally enjoy challenges and pretty much every day my apprenticeship takes me out of my comfort zone – I could be white water kayaking one day, learning to drive a powerboat the next or improving my sailing skills in Plymouth Sound. I’m looking forward to qualifying fully as an instructor as despite the added pressure of looking after children and groups, it’s going to be great to give back and share the knowledge and experiences that I have gained through my apprenticeship.

My personal highlight so far has to be completing my Royal Yachting Association Level 2 Power boating in which I learnt how to safely drive the powerboats at the centre. We have been practising man-overboard drills this morning and this afternoon we’ll be completing high speed practice and a navigation exercise. My future plans are to complete my apprenticeship, continue gaining activity qualifications and look to work either in the UK or abroad within activity centres. My apprenticeship has opened huge opportunities that I never even knew or existed and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.

Many thanks for John for taking the time out from his powerboating course to come speak with us! We wish him all the best in his apprenticeship
