Superheros abseil at Mount Batten Centre

30th April 2014

On Sunday 4th May a group of staff and friends from Hannahs in Ivybridge will be taking part in a Superhero Abseil. They will be donning their Superhero capes and abseiling off the Mount Batten Abseiling Wall in Plymouth at 10.30am.

The group are raising money to build a sensory room in Hannahwood, Hannahs young adult provision.Over the years Hannahs has developed dramatically to enable children and young adults with profound medical conditions to live as enriching and normal lives as possible.

A sensory room is particularly important as the majority of the young adults have sensory impairments and being submerged in a sensory environment will be extremely beneficial for them. For some, sensory stimulation is the only form of communication due to their medical conditions and just by being in a room full of lights can really make a huge difference.

The event has been organised by Bex Marshall who said “We are really grateful to the Mount Batten Centre for letting us hold the Abseil there. A new sensory room is much needed in Hannahwood and the Abseil is one of several fundraising events taking place. I have been fundraising for this project for 18 months and have already done a bike ride and sky dive as well as organising a fun day and prize draws.  We are also very grateful for several generous donations including those from Plymouth Community Homes and 16 year old singer Alice Gullick. We are at £9,300 so halfway there!”

Project-Ability Paralympic Games event

1st April 2014

Members of staff from the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre worked with partners across the city to support the Project Ability Paralympic Games Event held at the Plymouth Life Centre in April. The event was opened by Para-Olympian David Hill.

Over 130 school children from across the city took part in a range of activities including U Canoe Wired, a new initiative from Canoe England, which encourages people of all ages to try canoeing, on dry land, in a relaxed, informal and supportive environment.

Sam Waites, Activities Manager at the Mount Batten Centre said "We're delighted to be working with U Canoe to deliver fun and engaging canoe sessions using the state-of-the-art equipment. The children had so much fun and it's a great way to get them engaged with watersports and build up their confidence before they visit the Centre and get out on the water."

The aim of Project Ability is to have more young disabled pupils taking part in competitive sport. Through the School Games and a network of fifty lead Project Ability schools in England, each selected for their established expertise in engaging young disabled people, schools can improve the quality, and extend the provision, of physical activity for disabled pupils.

The Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre celebrates 15 years this June. The Centre provides a wide range of training, educational and social watersports and land-based activities. For further information please contact the Centre on 01752 404567.
