We've recently launched a Crowdfunder campaign, Plymouth Paddle-Ability, to raise funds for two Bellboats to enable Special Educational Needs (SEN) children to enjoy the benefits of canoeing.
In just two weeks, since the month-long fundraising campaign launched, and over £2,500 has been raised towards the £13,000 overall target and support from the local community, businesses and individuals has been overwhelming.
Sam Waites, Activities Manager at the Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre said "There is one specific group of people that we feel limited in what we are able to offer them, namely children and young people with special educational needs. At present we are able to take them out sailing as we have boats suitable for this, however we are very limited in what other watersports we can offer. We desperately want to address this, by providing suitable boats for them to take part in paddlesports, as we know the demand is there and the benefits to the children and young people are proven, so we've launched our first ever Crowdfunder campaign."
We have made the decision to launch the Plymouth Paddle-Ability Crowdfunder campaign to raise funds to buy two Bellboats because these specialist canoes are very stable and allow for maximum participation (with or without support workers as appropriate) enabling the Centre to open up the opportunity for everyone to try, and enjoy, paddlesports.
So far the Centre has had the backing of video testimonials, rewards (in return for pledges) and social media promotion; from the Transat bakerly sailors who all signed a t-shirt, to renowned Plymouth diving instructor Andy Banks who has backed the campaign, and to the many local businesses who have generously donated rewards that people pledging can choose.
As one pledger wrote on the Crowdfunder campaign page "Our children have both enjoyed learning to sail and kayak at Mount Batten, this project will enable all to have the same experiences. Good Luck!"
