RYA YOUTH SAILING SCHEME

The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Youth Sailing Scheme is an inspiring way to learn and develop your practical skills in a safe environment. Children from the age of eight can join our courses at any level of experience.

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage One

A concise introduction to the sport of dinghy sailing. By the end of the course an individual would be able to sail across the wind and back again.

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage Two

This aims to increase confidence and competence in a range of weather conditions enabling the sailor to sail a dinghy on all points of sail.

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage Three

On successfully completing a stage 3 course the sailor can make independent discussions as to, choice of course, sail setting, dagger board adjustment. They will also be able to happily sail upwind, downwind and around a triangular course.

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage Four

Youth scheme training generally takes place in single-handed dinghies; stage 4 concentrates on developing team work in crewed sailing boats allowing the sailors to develop the skills learnt in stage three. During a five day course this could include an introduction to racing, spinnaker handling, day sailing and an intro to multi-hulls.

Youth Advanced Sailing Week

Beyond Stage 4 this is the week to challenge your skills which will include day trips, spinnaker coaching and the opportunity to try a range of boats.

RYA WINDSURFING RYA

Windsurf Level 1 - Starting Point

This will teach the basics getting you up and sailing in a short time. The course will provide an exciting platform from which you will be able to enjoy the world of windsurfing.

RYA Windsurf Level 2

Moving on up Increase the wind, increase speed. A look at the skills which will lead to becoming a complete windsurfer, improved stance, intro to harness, beach starts and a lot more. Both RYA Windsurf Level 1 and 2 can also be gained by working towards them at our Saturday sessions.

YOUNG ADULTS - LEARN TO SAIL OR KAYAK (14 - 16 years)

Do you want to learn a new exciting and challenging sport which will enhance your way of life? We at the MBC recognise the apprehension of a young adult booking a course to find that other course members are well below your age. Therefore we are providing the opportunity for 14 to 16 year olds to learn new activities with other like minded young adults helping to create an enjoyable and rewarding learning environment. These courses will provide instruction to allow you to gain qualifications from the RYA National sailing scheme and the BCU.

CLUBS

Saturday Sailing and Windsurfing Sessions

Our Saturday sailing / windsurf clubs provide the opportunity to be coached by qualified RYA instructors on a regular basis, allowing for continuity to develop with an individuals sailing ability. These sessions are a great way for you to work towards your next RYA certificate in a friendly club environment.

Saturday Kayaking Club

Complementing our BCU training courses run through out the year these exciting club sessions allow you to develop new skills or to refine the skills learnt during a course. This will provide a comfortable skill base from which to go on and complete your next BCU qualification.

Sunday Race Clinics

New for 2007 we will be running youth race training sessions each month. This will allow young people who are stage 4 and beyond the opportunity to refine their sailing ability, and give them the skills and confidence to perform on the race course. The format of the day will be a specific training exercise in the morning followed by racing after lunch. Throughout the year all the technical aspects of racing will be touched upon as well as introducing all the varieties of racing.

Advanced Sailing/Seamanship Skills Workshops

We have designed a programme which will appeal to young people who wish to work on advanced skills including spinnaker work, strong wind technique and day sailing. The purpose of these sessions is to provide coaching which will allow the sailors to have a solid skill base in a full range of craft and conditions. A perfect opportunity for the young person to concentrate on the sailing skills required to become a RYA instructor.

POWERBOATING

RYA Powerboat Junior Level 1 Learn how to drive a powerboat. This RYA Course covers safety and boat handling skills. Certificates will be endorsed until the age of 16 for supervised use only in line with RYA regulations.

KAYAKING

Kayaking Beginners Course

For newcomers or people with limited experience, this 2 day course covers skills of forward and reverse paddling, turning and basic safety at sea techniques and provides the opportunity for individuals to work towards BCU accreditation, either BCU 1 Star, or 8-12 year olds BCU Paddle Power. Paddle Power is an exciting new scheme which has been designed to meet the needs of young people. It has a youth centred approach which has four progressive levels taking the paddler to just beyond 1 star.

Youth Kayak Improver

Minimum 12 years A four day course to follow the 1 star, which covers journeying, advanced stroke work and rescues. Regular practice is essential. Successful candidates will receive the BCU 2* award.

ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES

Multi-Activity Water Sports Week A fun and exciting week, great for developing water confidence. The week will combine a variety of water sports these could include sailing, kayaking / canoeing and windsurfing. The weather will dictate which activities are available. Non certificated.

Land based Adventure Day

A day of challenge exploring Dartmoor. Learning your way around, crossing rivers, build a shelter in the woods and scramble over rocks and abseiling.

Caving Adventure Day

Explore Devon underground in the limestone caves at Buckfastleigh.

Climbing and Abseiling Adventure Day

An introduction to climbing and abseiling at our local limestone crag.

Single Handed Sailing Adventure Day

A one day taster session for beginners who would like to see if they enjoy the sport. Hawk 20 Sailing Adventure Day An introduction to expedition sailing, working together with an instructor and 6 students in each boat. The day consists of a sail around Plymouth Sound and lunch at a local spot.

Windsurf Adventure Day

It's wet, it's wild, it's windsurfing. An opportunity to find out whether this popular sport is for you.

Kayaking/Canoeing Adventure Day

Try raft running or kayak polo. A safe introduction or an opportunity to practice paddling skills in a mixture of kayak & open canoes.

Coasteering Adventure Day

Challenge your climbing skills traversing the sea cliffs, jumping and swimming the gaps. A safety boat is in attendance and buoyancy aids are worn. Water confidence is essential.

Gorge Walking Adventure Day

A great adventure, climbing up waterfalls, sliding down rapids and chutes in the river Plym on Dartmoor. Multi-Activity Adventure Day Experience the thrill of several activities in one day including kayaking or canoeing and an abseil to finish.
