Kayak from Plymouth to Roscoff for Charity without leaving land!

15th May 2017

The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust are delighted to have been chosen by Drake Circus as one of their four charities of the year, along with St. Lukes Hospice, Alzheimer’s Society and Shekinah Mission. The virtual kayak is the first event for the four Drake Circus charities to all work together and support each other.

The charity kayak challenge is being supported by British Canoeing using three ergo kayaks that are currently on loan from the national governing body to the Mount Batten Centre.

Alex King, Centre Director says “We’re delighted to have been chosen as one of the Drake Circus charities this year. Being situated in Britain’s Ocean City we believe that it’s incredibly important that anyone, especially children, should be able to experience being on or near the water and learn new experiences including team-work and confidence building. Whilst you won’t get wet having a go on our ergo kayaks, events such as this are a great way for us to demonstrate the wide range of activities that we do here at the Centre, whilst supporting other excellent charities in Plymouth.”

Renowned polar explorer Antony Jinman will be visiting the kayakers at 1pm on the day to support the event, and students from Woodlands Special School will also be getting involved with the challenge too.

The event starts at 8am on Thursday 18th May at Drake Circus and finishes at 8pm - all are welcome to come and have a go at virtual kayaking!

Local school recycles and gets rewarded with activities on land and on water!

28th April 2017

Montpelier Primary School have successfully been piloting a new recycling scheme in partnership with the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre which enables the school to gain credits in exchange for activities.

The ‘Recycle for Rewards’ campaign will now be launched to all primary and secondary schools across the city to enable more pupils to enjoy activities both on land, and on water at the Centre.

The scheme is very simple, for each 30kg of clothes recycling that the school, or business or group, collects, £18 worth of credit is applied to a range of land and water based activities - enabling more people to enjoy activities at the Centre whilst recycling.

Sam Waites, Activities Manager at the Mount Batten Centre says ‘The pilot scheme for Recycle for Rewards has been really popular with Montpelier Primary School and they’ve enjoyed time at the Centre on a couple of occasions since they started recycling. It’s so important to us that we are able to allow as many children and adults of all abilities the opportunity to try new activities and by encouraging recycling in exchange for credit its win-win for all.’

The Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre is a charity (The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust) and has always in its sixteen years of operation considered the ‘advancement of education’ and the ‘advancement of amateur sport’ at its core and ‘to promote, sustain and increase individual and collective knowledge and understanding of specific areas of study, skills and expertise.’
