Plymouth Paddle-Ability so everyone can enjoy the water

12th May 2016

We've recently launched a Crowdfunder campaign, Plymouth Paddle-Ability, to raise funds for two Bellboats to enable Special Educational Needs (SEN) children to enjoy the benefits of canoeing.

In just two weeks, since the month-long fundraising campaign launched, and over £2,500 has been raised towards the £13,000 overall target and support from the local community, businesses and individuals has been overwhelming.

Sam Waites, Activities Manager at the Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre said "There is one specific group of people that we feel limited in what we are able to offer them, namely children and young people with special educational needs. At present we are able to take them out sailing as we have boats suitable for this, however we are very limited in what other watersports we can offer. We desperately want to address this, by providing suitable boats for them to take part in paddlesports, as we know the demand is there and the benefits to the children and young people are proven, so we've launched our first ever Crowdfunder campaign."

We have made the decision to launch the Plymouth Paddle-Ability Crowdfunder campaign to raise funds to buy two Bellboats because these specialist canoes are very stable and allow for maximum participation (with or without support workers as appropriate) enabling the Centre to open up the opportunity for everyone to try, and enjoy, paddlesports.

So far the Centre has had the backing of video testimonials, rewards (in return for pledges) and social media promotion; from the Transat bakerly sailors who all signed a t-shirt, to renowned Plymouth diving instructor Andy Banks who has backed the campaign, and to the many local businesses who have generously donated rewards that people pledging can choose.

As one pledger wrote on the Crowdfunder campaign page "Our children have both enjoyed learning to sail and kayak at Mount Batten, this project will enable all to have the same experiences. Good Luck!"

National Apprenticeship Week 2016

18th March 2016

It's National Apprenticeship Week and the Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre have their own team of Apprentices.

Each year, the Centre supports young people by offering them an Apprenticeship in either Business Administration or Activity Leadership. By working in partnership with a local training provider, the Centre are able to provide valuable work experience and show apprentices what it's really like to work in a busy and varied environment.

Sam Waites, Activities Manager says "We've supported apprentices here at the Centre for many years. It's really important for us to be able to provide training and work experience, via a recognised Apprenticeship programme, as a route to possible employment for young people who want to work in the leisure and hospitality industry. We are able to show them the day-in-day-out real life work experiences that are involved in the running of the Centre and as part of the team how they can help and impact too."

Business Administration apprentice Kylie says "Being an apprentice at the Centre is great. Everyone is so lovely and has been so welcoming. I enjoy going to work every day. The atmosphere is always so nice and everyone is so helpful and patient when it comes to helping me and training me with day to day jobs. I already feel more confident in my abilities and I have developed a lot of life skills in the time I have been here already, I feel a lot more prepared for my future and whatever job route I take after this year. I’m love my apprenticeship!"
