The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust recently received £4,692 to fund respite activities for Young Carers in Plymouth during the Autumn half term and next year’s February half term break.

The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation, which offers Discovery Grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities.

Since being formally incorporated as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in December 2014 the Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust has fundraised to provide opportunities for disadvantaged people, including local young carers groups. The Centre has formed a close working partnership with Plymouth Charity “Friends and Families of Special Children”, and the grant will be used to fund respite activities for young children that care for a family member who are part of the “Fun and Freedom Club”. Young carers will have the opportunity to kayak, abseil and paddleboard, accredited activities designed to build confidence within a supportive atmosphere – but most importantly provide essential respite from the caring role and enable the young carers to be children.

Alex King, Centre Director at the Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust said: “The Santander Discovery Grant will make a huge difference for the Centre to continue our activity programme for young carers. To provide respite care for these young people, who have caring responsibilities at such a tender age, continue their own personal development and achieve accredited courses through our programme is incredibly rewarding and epitomises the charitable work of the Centre.”

Elaine Bleazard, Branch Director at Santander’s Armada Way Plymouth branch, said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. We are committed to playing a key part in the community and we are delighted to be supporting the Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust, and hope the donation makes a real difference to local people.”
