What a week here in Plymouth and the actual SailGP racing hasn’t even started yet!

On Tuesday we were delighted to share the exciting news that Plymouth has been awarded £9.5million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to make its vision of a park in the sea a reality and yesterday we welcomed local schools to the Centre as part of SailGP’s Inspire programme.

The SailGP Inspire Learning programme aims to provide young people with the ultimate education experience through sailing both on, and off, the water. The programme is taught through the innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)-based elements to help young people engage with the science of sailing in a dynamic, inspirational and engaging way.

Local pupils from across the city joined us here at the Centre and took to the Sound for an introduction to sailing.

Teacher Johnson Wenner from Compton C of E Primary School brought his class along and yesterday evening we received this feedback [published with permission]:

“I just wanted to email my personal thanks for such a phenomenal day today. The children have been in complete awe over the experience, and the activities were so engaging, they even made me think about my teaching practice and what I can offer!

The execution of the event was simply perfect. All the adults were so supportive, enthusiastic and they made sure the children were challenged at every opportunity. Watching them sail in pairs was daunting to hear, but the instructors provided the best teaching experience for the children to excel and it was humbling to see them being so independent on the water.

In a year where COVID has pretty much ruined most enrichment activities, you and your team pulled it out of the bag and inspired so many young minds; I am adamant they will always remember this experience and become STEM leaders of the future!

On behalf of the children and staff at Compton C of E Primary School, a massive thank you to everyone involved with today’s event, it was simply outstanding!”

The SailGP Inspire programme is a community engagement programme that breaks boundaries in sailing and races for a better future.

We are so proud to have been able to support the programme this week and work with local, national and international partners to show off Plymouth at its best.
